SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDANCE FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

Whilst social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) has many benefits for medical students, if used without caution, there may be unwanted consequences. Therefore, this guidance will aid UK medical students' understanding on the appropriate use of social media, based on GMC's 'Achieving Good Medical Practice' guide.

How to use this guide

We have summarised the key learning points from GMC's 'Achieving Good Medical Practice' guide and have separated them into 4 different domains: patient confidentiality, anonymity, maintaining boundaries, and respect for colleagues.

In order to learn more about 'Achieving Good Medical Practice' in regards to social media and you as a medical student, visit each of the sections below. To go through the five scenarios, click the arrow on the right to proceed. You can also test your knowledge with the quiz afterwards!

It should take approximately 10 minutes to complete this.
